Welcome to The Song’s the Thing! Podcast #0004

Please also note: This music-related podcast series was formerly entitled The Whistle Test, meaning that on anything published prior to November 2023, you may see that title used.

In today’s episode, I’m talking with Jack Monck.

The video version of today’s episode will also appear on Spotify very soon. For now, here’s a link to it on YouTube.

Jack Monck is a British bass player, musician and songwriter.

Since the late 60s up to the present day, Jack has been and is still actively involved in many well-known bands and musical projects, too many to mention here. He started playing the bass guitar circa 1967 with the blues band Delivery, whose members included several other influential musicians, not least the guitarist Phil Miller, the drummer Pip Pyle, and the saxophonist Lol Coxhill.

In the late 60’s and early 70s Jack Monck was an active and influential musician within what is now often referred to as The Canterbury Scene and Progressive Rock.

This 1972 β€˜Ottawa Company’ poster (below) from a gig at which Jack performed, gives you some idea of the calibre of musicians that he was mixing with at this time.

In 1972 Jack was living near Cambridge, where he met the legendary singer-songwriter and guitarist, Syd Barrett, co-founder and principal songwriter of Pink Floyd.

Along with the drummer Twink, Jack and Syd, formed the now almost mythical band Stars. And the rest is history…

I really enjoyed this conversation with Jack. He has a wealth of knowledge and experience as a musician, and he’s a great player β€” I especially enjoyed the jam sessions we had recently. A true gentleman, it was my honour and pleasure to interview him.

Some of Jack’s music is available online at n1m.com
